Rajendra Pachauri, “The ONE”

I couldn’t believe my eyes when the media-engulfed Rajendra Pachauri walked through the conference room door. To that point, I hadn’t read the session description beyond the title, but I knew anything IPCC related would be important. I did not realize that the session was to be an update *by* the heads of the IPCC. Cameras flashed, the buzzing room hushed, and Pachauri held a full court press before taking the microphone.

Anything climate change related is joined at the hip to the IPCC assessments. And any and (nearly) all cap-and-trade, carbon tax, CDM, mitigation, adaptation, or choose-your-climate-scheme, schemes necessarily are based on these technical assessments. This session provided a major progress report for the highly anticipated Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), due in 2014. The other big news is that a special report outlining Ar5’s latest scientific findings, disaster risks, economics, and new features will be published in 2011. So, from my point of view, an adapter, this was one of the best side-events available at COP15.
